In the summer of 2012 he will move to Japan for a teaching position at an exclusive university.

Firmware Modification Attacks and the Rise of Printer Malware
Network printers are ubiquitous fixtures within the modern IT infrastructure. Residing within sensitive networks and lacking in security, these devices represent high-value targets that can theoretically be used not only to manipulate and exfiltrate the sensitive information such as network credentials and sensitive documents, but also as fully functional general-purpose bot-nodes which give attackers a stealthy, persistent foothold inside the victim network for further recognizance, exploitation and exfiltration.

We first present several generic firmware modification attacks against HP printers. Weaknesses within the firmware update process allows the attacker to make arbitrary modifications to the NVRAM contents of the device. The attacks we present exploit a functional vulnerability common to all HP printers, and do not depend on any specific code vulnerability. These attacks cannot be prevented by any authentication mechanism on the printer, and can be delivered over the network, either directly or through a print server (active attack) and as hidden payloads within documents (reflexive attack).

In order to demonstrate these firmware modification attacks, we present a detailed description of several common HP firmware RFU (remote firmware update) formats, including the general file format, along with the compression and checksum algorithms used. Furthermore, we will release a tool (HPacker), which can unpack existing RFUs and create/pack arbitrary RFUs. This information was obtained by analysis of publicly available RFUs as well as reverse engineering the SPI BootRom contents of several printers.
Next, we describe the design and operation a sophisticated piece of malware for HP (P2050) printers. Essentially a VxWorks rootkit, this malware is equipped with: port scanner, covert reverse-IP proxy, print-job snooper that can monitor, intercept, manipulate and exfiltrate incoming print-jobs, a live code update mechanism, and more (see presentation outline below). Lastly, we will demonstrate a self-propagation mechanism, turning this malware into a full-blown printer worm.

Using HPacker, we demonstrate the injection of our malware into arbitrary P2050 RFUs, and show how similar malware can be created for other popular HP printer types. Next, we demonstrate the delivery of this modified firmware update over the network to a fully locked-down printer.

Lastly, we present an accurate distribution of all HP printers vulnerable to our attack, as determined by our global embedded device vulnerability scanner (see [1]). Our scan is still incomplete, but extrapolating from available data, we estimate that there exist at least 100,000 HP printers that can be compromised through an active attack, and several million devices that can be compromised through reflexive attacks. We will present a detailed breakdown of the geographical and organizational distribution of observable vulnerable printers in the world.

*We have also unpacked several engine-control processor firmwares (different from the main SoC) and are currently attempting to locate code related to tracking dots. Perhaps we will have some results by December. In any case, HPacker will help the community to do further research in this direction, possibly allowing us to spoof / disable these yellow dots of burden.

The Converse China skateboard team ventured up north to give their neighbor, Mongolia, a week long visit! Besides filming skateboarding in Ulaanbaatar, the troupe journeyed through the chilly Gobi Desert via camels, stayed in traditional yurts and experienced some unwelcoming as well as sketchy situations while trying to just film some maneuvers on rough terrain.

Η αστυνομία δεν σεβάστηκε ούτε τους τραυματισμένους διαδηλωτές που κατευθύνονταν για περίθαλψη στο αυτοσχέδιο ιατρείο, υπό την αιγίδα του Ερυθρού Σταυρού, που έχουν στήσει εδώ και 36 μέρες οι "Αγανακτισμένοι" του Συντάγματος.
Αυτό που δεν γίνεται ούτε σε εμπόλεμες ζώνες, έγινε σήμερα στο Σύνταγμα, με αποτέλεσμα το ιατρείο να μην μπορεί να λειτουργήσει από ένα σημείο και μετά και να μεταφερθεί ο εξοπλισμός εντός του Μετρό.

Συγκεκριμένα, στις 4 Ιουνίου, από τις 11:00 το πρωί, στην πλατεία Άρη Βελουχιώτη, θα φιλοξενηθεί το Λούνα Παρκ της Ανακύκλωσης, με τη συνεργασία της Ελληνικής Εταιρείας Αξιοποίησης Ανακύκλωσης (ΕΕΑΑ), όπου οι μικροί δημότες θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να μάθουν για την Ανακύκλωση, η οποία μετατρέπεται σε εμπειρία ευχάριστη και ταυτόχρονα σε διασκεδαστική συνήθεια, μέσα από παιχνίδια όπως το κυνήγι χαμένου θησαυρού, το ψάρεμα, το μπόουλινγκ, οι τσουβαλοδρομίες, ο τροχός της Aνακύκλωσης, το φιδάκι, ο κάδος, το πάζλ, οι κρίκοι, ο στόχος και πολλά άλλα. Όλα τα παιδιά που θα συμμετέχουν όχι μόνο θα περάσουν καταπληκτικά, αλλά θα κερδίσουν και διάφορα δώρα. Η διαδραστική αυτή ενέργεια, στοχεύει στην ενδυνάμωση της ιδέας της Ανακύκλωσης στον μπλε κάδο και την ευαισθητοποίηση της νέας γενιάς για την αξία των ανακυκλώσιμων υλικών.
Παράλληλα, την ίδια ημέρα, στις 12:00 το μεσημέρι θα γίνει η έναρξη της παιδικής θεατρικής παράστασης με τίτλο: «Από πού παν στο Σκουπιδο…Πρασινιστάν;», η οποία αποτελεί αξιόλογη δουλειά του θεάτρου Ελεύθερη Έκφραση. Πρόκειται για μια διαδραστική οικολογική θεατρική παράσταση στην οποία όλα τα παιδιά θα έχουν το δικό τους ρόλο. Το θέμα είναι η Ανακύκλωση, η προστασία του δάσους και η ισορροπία στη φύση. Στόχος της παράστασης είναι τα οικολογικά ζητήματα και από νωρίς να προβληματιστούν οι μικροί δημότες για το περιβάλλον, μέσα από τη συμμετοχή και τη δράση.
Επιπλέον, στην πλατεία, από το πρωί στις 11:00, θα λειτουργήσει έκθεση ζωγραφικής και χειροτεχνίας από τους μαθητές των Νηπιαγωγείων του Δήμου μας. Το θέμα είναι: "Με την Ανακύκλωση προστατεύω το Περιβάλλον. Ζωγραφίζω & φτιάχνω τις ιδέες μου". Έχει δοθεί μεγάλη έμφαση στη βιωματική εμπλοκή των παιδιών στα θέματα του περιβάλλοντος γιατί βοηθά στην εμπέδωση της περιβαλλοντικής συνείδησης και στη δημιουργία οικολογικής και ευαισθητοποιημένης συμπεριφοράς. Τα παιδιά με αυτό τον τρόπο μαθαίνουν να προβληματίζονται και να αναζητούν λύσεις επιστρατεύοντας τη δημιουργικότητα και τη φαντασία τους.

Την ίδια ημέρα, απέναντι από την πλατεία θα υπάρχει το ειδικό κοντέινερ του συστήματος ΑΝΑΚΥΚΛΩΣΗ ΣΥΣΚΕΥΩΝ Α.Ε και θα έχουν όλοι οι δημότες τη δυνατότητα να φέρουν τις παλιές τους ηλεκτρικές & ηλεκτρονικές συσκευές (μικρές & μεγάλες) προκειμένου να σταλούν για ανακύκλωση και να ολοκληρώσουν τον κύκλο ζωής τους. Ταυτόχρονα στην πλατεία θα υπάρχουν ενημερωτικά stands και θα πραγματοποιείται εντυποδιανομή, από τα εγκεκριμένα από το ΥΠΕΚΑ, συστήματα Ανακύκλωσης: ΑΝΑΚΥΚΛΩΣΗ ΣΥΣΚΕΥΩΝ Α.Ε & Ανακύκλωση μπαταριών ΑΦΗΣ, έτσι όλοι οι δημότες θα έχουν τη δυνατότητα να ενημερώνονται σε θέματα ανακύκλωσης με τον καταλληλότερο τρόπο.
Στο πλαίσιο των δράσεων αυτών και του εορτασμού της Παγκόσμιας Ημέρας Περιβάλλοντος, την Κυριακή, 5 Ιουνίου στις 11:00 π.μ στο Δημοτικό Θέατρο “Μελίνα Μερκούρη”, ο Δήμος σε συνεργασία με το Πανελλήνιο Κέντρο Οικολογικών Ερευνών (ΠΑΚΟΕ), θα διοργανώσει Ημερίδα με θέμα:”Καλοκαιρινές Διακοπές. Απολαύστε τις με γνώση” και αντικείμενο τα αποτελέσματα πρόσφατων μετρήσεων για τη θαλάσσια ρύπανση του Σαρωνικού, Ευβοϊκού και Κορινθιακού κόλπου. Έξω από την αίθουσα του θεάτρου θα λειτουργήσει έκθεση φωτογραφίας.

Στις μέρες μας, η περιβαλλοντική κρίση έχει φέρει την ανθρωπότητα σε σημείο στο οποίο δεν υπάρχει το περιθώριο της αδράνειας ή ακόμα και της καθυστέρησης. Support Japan Music Event - First report

Been a while again… Lots of things going on and an absolutely bare minimum of time: MANGAIJIN ~memories~ came out via Blurb.com just in time for COMICDOM CON ATHENS 2011 (more on that in a future post), over the past two months I have written two new detective stories (“Culture Pop” and “The Gargoyle’s Song”), one set to come out in May and the other (probably) June, then there was COMICDOM CON, of course, as well as the lengthy reports that followed it.

That said, just a week after the convention, we got together with a couple of friends and hosted a charity music event for the victims of the recent earthquake, tsunami and danger of radioactive exposure from the reactor on Fukushima (where radiation levels have now reached those of the Chernobyl disaster, although the contamination is not as widespread).

The whole idea was first mentioned by Kyoshiro around a month ago and after a get-together, KrizD, N8, Bloody K. and myself were on board (as well as Kami, added later). Details on the event were posted on Facebook, a number of blogs, Anime.gr, communicated via posters, as well as a donation box, placed at the entrance of the Hellenic-American Union, over the three days of the comic book convention.

Although we encountered a number of problems at the beginning of the event, with a bit of obsessive compulsion, divine intervention and the presence of one Alexander Markezis, CFO of a corporation known only as “Tremere”, we were able to get the whole thing off the ground. I would like to take a moment and thank all of you who attended this very special event, thereby showing true affection for this country, whose culture we so cherish. Even at the outset, there were those who said that it was meaningless, that any amount we gathered would be insignificant in the face of the disaster, or by comparison to Japan’s economy. I said it then and I say it now: no amount of help is meaningless. No, it won’t save Japan, it won’t even be noticed by anyone other than those who receive the help, but, in this case they are all we care about, the only thing that matters. It is what we could do, so we did it. Pure and simple.

As we speak, the amount collected has been used to buy clothes for children in the struck areas, which will be then distributed via a local relief group in Fukushima. Again, thank you all for being there.

As for the event itself, our roster and succession at the decks was a bit wacky, with KrizD starting, followed by Kami, followed by myself and finally, our lovely freak, N8. We also had a small exhibition at Da Sein’s basement, comprised of photos from various areas struck by the three calamities, as well as art from all over the world, drawn in support of Japan. Furthermore, Kyoshiro selected some pieces from the blog Voices From Japan which consist Tweets from and related to the situation in the country. I translated the texts into Greek and Kyoshiro was in charge of editing, printing and setting up our exhibits.

Η καταστροφή της 11^ης Μαρτίου 2011 από τον σεισμό και το tsunami στο βόρειο Honshu της Ιαπωνίας είχε αποτέλεσμα, μέχρι τώρα, 27000 νεκρούς και αγνοούμενους, καθώς και τουλάχιστον 250000 αστέγους, ενώ ο κίνδυνος εκτεταμένης ραδιενεργής δηλητηρίασης από τους αντιδραστήρες της Fukushima εξακολουθεί να είναι ορατός. Με αφορμή αυτά τα γεγονότα, αποφασίσαμε να διοργανώσουμε μια φιλανθρωπική μουσική βραδιά, προκειμένου να μαζευτούν χρήματα και να αγοραστούν προμήθειες που θα αποσταλούν στην Ιαπωνία κατόπιν συνεννοήσεως με τοπικούς φορείς. Πολλοί ίσως πουν ότι μια μικρή ανεξάρτητη κίνηση δεν θα κάνει τη διαφορά, αλλά αυτό είναι κάτι που μπορούν να το κρίνουν μόνο οι πληγέντες και τα σωστικά συνεργεία. Εμείς απλά ανήκουμε σε ένα ευρύτερο σύνολο ανθρώπων που τρέφει μεγάλη αγάπη και σεβασμό για τον ιαπωνικό πολιτισμό και θέλουμε να το δείξουμε εμπράκτως αυτήν την κρίσιμη ώρα.

Σας περιμένουμε λοιπόν στις 15 Απριλίου στο Da Sein (Σολωμού 12, Εξάρχεια) και ώρα 20:00, όπου θα σας ψυχαγωγήσουν με ιαπωνική μουσική από τα decks οι ραδιοφωνικοί παραγωγοί του indieground radio (Bloody K. KrizD, Mr. Loof, N8), σε συνεργασία με τους Speedgrapher και Kami. Η συγκεκριμένη εκδήλωση δεν ανήκει στη συνήθη κατηγορία των J-party, αλλά αποτελεί μια έμπρακτη προσευχή για τους ανθρώπους που δοκιμάζονται αυτή τη στιγμή στην άλλη άκρη του κόσμου.

Given the disaster in Japan, on 11/03/2011 (the earthquake, tsunami, as well as the ongoing danger of radioactive poisoning), we have decided to organize an event, in order to support the country whose culture we love so much. It is a music event but not your usual J-Party, since it is intended as a fund-raiser: our target is to raise money, in order to send help (in the from of provisions and materials) to those struck by the disaster, as well as the rescue crews. The line-up of DJs includes radio producers of indieground radio (Ν8 + Bloody Κ, KrizD + Mr. Loof), Speedgrapher and Kami. We must stress that this is not a cosplay party and we would rather it were avoided (although there is no dress code or anything).

Αποκριάτικες στολές για μικρά παιδιά, εδώ γελάμε! Αυτό το έντυπο το μοιράζουν έξω από τα δημοτικά σχολεία. Φυσικά και θα το έκανα ανάρτηση (post) στο ιστολόγιο (blog) μου, με αυτό που πρόσεξα.

Η χαρά του προχωρημένου γονέα ,αλλά και του παιδεραστή ίσως.

Εγώ δεν συμφωνώ με τις συγκεκριμένες αποκριάτικες στολές τέτοιου είδους για τα παιδάκια.

Αν ήταν ενήλικες δεν θα με ένοιαζε, βέβαια έχει και στολές για ενήλικες, ξαναγελάμε.

Ναι ειρωνεία είναι το γελάμε διότι μάλλον εγώ αντιλαμβάνομαι διαφορετικά το όλο θέμα.
